How to report RSU sales on your tax return

Brokers frequently report a cost basis of zero or of the strike/discount only. Filing that number as-is means paying tax twice on the same income.

The correct basis

For RSUs, basis equals the fair market value per share on the vest date — the amount already taxed on your W-2.

How to fix it

Report the broker's number on Form 8949, then use column (f) code B and column (g) to adjust to the correct basis. The gain flows to Schedule D.

Documents to gather

1099-B, the supplemental statement from your broker, your vest confirmations and your W-2.
